Using a Pedometer to Improve Your Health

Pedometers can help add fun into walking for your health and they can serve as great motivators and trackers. A pedometer is basically a small digital device not much bigger than a pager or cell phone that counts steps. The more high-tech models can also have additional functions to select from.

A number of pedometers are available with different features and prices. This is why it may be wise to consider your needs and your budget before purchasing one.

For the best accuracy most pedometers should be kept horizontal and be worn on the waistband.  In case the device comes unclipped and to prevent it from falling off and getting lost while walking or jogging, safety straps are available. Additional features that can be useful are calorie counters, heart rate monitors and distance counters.

To get the best results from a pedometer it is wise to wear it daily and all day long. This will enable you to initially accumulate your average number of steps based on your regular activities and allow you to set realistic goals. A goal you might consider is gradually increasing your steps by 250-500 per day to reach a 10,000 daily step count. On average 1,000 steps equals ½ mile. Of course this can vary depending on the speed and length of your stride.

10,000 steps per day may seem an ambitious goal but there are a number of easy ways that you can achieve this. You might consider skipping the elevator and taking the stairs, parking at a greater distance from where you want to go and creating situations where you will walk more during a given day. Other ways include walking to an associate’s office instead of calling them, taking a turn around the block at lunchtime and taking the dog and your kids for a walk after dinner every evening.

Pedometers can help your kids increase their physical activity and become more fit also. You might consider holding family contests and awarding prizes to the family member who did the best that week. With a pedometer you could record everyone’s progress and set goals. Walking is one of the simplest exercises you can do to get into shape and improve your health.

Walking Weight Loss – One Step At A Time

Walking weight loss is one of the simplest ways to lose weight. All you have to do is put one foot in front of the other one and away you go.  I won’t bore you with all the health benefits of walking and how walking can help improve your stamina, heart rate, help you burn fat, and overall fitness.  I just want to talk about why walking can be so much fun.

Walking weight loss often times requires an efficient motivator. And, what else could that be but a pedometer or step counter use to gauge the numbers of walks and how far you’ve managed to walk in a day. 200 steps is about 1 mile, so just imagine how many miles you can walk in a matter of days.

• Avoid rooms for excuses. No matter where you are, whatever the weather condition you’re in, find somewhere else to walk. If the weather doesn’t permit you to walk outside, you can simply do it at the mall, or in school grounds, your apartment building or even at the office. Just hotfoot it past the cafeteria, pantry or food court and you’re on your way to walking yourself fit.

• Walk at a comfortable pace for 10 to 20 minutes. Set your timer as you break in to a slight sweat with your heartbeat slowly increasing – these are good signs of starting yourself for a walk. Walking weight loss centers on progression and that’s how you should carefully plan your walking routine – a slow comfortable pacing at the outset followed by a higher level of intensity and speed on the latter.

• Remember to keep yourself hydrated before, during and after your walk. Forget about sports and energy drinks which are loaded with high amounts of sugar and syrup. Walking weight loss embraces the kind of substance you put in before, during and after your walk-plan and plain water is just the right kind of drink to substitute liquid loss.

 • Listening to music will keep your motivations and spirits up and going. Walking weight loss likewise necessitates the use of technology. A lot of walkers take pleasure in doing their thing on a daily basis because they have music to accompany their workouts. You can program a mix of music each properly selected based on your warm ups, walk proper and cool downs. Based on actual findings: A group of obese people who managed to listen to music as they walk lose twice as much weight judge against those who are in the same program but without music to play in the background.

• Add intervals to your walking routine. Fast walking for about 3 to 5 minutes and gradually decreasing your speed the moment you’ve reached your time is one good way of walking weight loss effectively. By increasing your intervals, you’re able to burn more calories given a short duration of time as a way of prevailing over a plateau in weight loss. So whatever phasing and intervals you decide on executing, just keep moving and walking!

Walking weight loss can be very relaxing and if you walk with someone it can be a great way to release some stress.

Did you know walking keeps your heart health, increases energy, improves your sleep, keeps bones health, and improves flexiablity and coordination. For more information on walking weight loss, visit http://www.slimerweight.com/walking-to-burn-fat-best-fat-burning-exercise/.

Hip Pedometer to Monitor Heart Rate

The most modern type of monitoring the heart rate is by the use of comfortable and handy pedometers. The main function of this device is not merely for monitoring heart rate but in counting the steps. Monitoring the heart rate or pulse rate is just the secondary function of this device. Many exercisers have been using this device to help them out during their workouts and daily exercises. One of the famous types of pedometer is the hip pedometer. Others use the watch pedometer and other types depending on the users preferred style.

Hip pedometer is an accelerometer that estimates the calories burned, distance, and speed. Its main function is to count the steps done by a person all throughout his workout or activity. The sensitivity of pedometer can be adjusted if it is recording too few or too many steps. This device may record some false step such as passing in hump when you are riding a vehicle, a bump and other false steps that it might record. To resolve this you need to choose a hip pedometer which has higher sensitivity on false step in order for you to record the steps accurately.

There are some pedometers wherein you schedule the turn itself on and stop recording at certain time, it allows up to 6 start and stop per day. It is very convenient to use and handy. It has a clip to ensure its attachment in the hip. Once this device is turned on one can start viewing your not only your steps but the sped, calories burned, distance, heart rate, time and exercise time in order. It can save a total of seven daily exercises and ten weekly totals.

Step recording of hip pedometer is fairly accurate. This is according to the user of this type of pedometer. Distance and speed reading depends on measuring the stride and length accurately and providing the pedometer that setting. One needs to be consistent in the stride and length during the walking workout. Setting up the stride and length is important in order to have an accurate reading. This device is used in order to count the steps accurately, however if you only want to estimate the distance and speed then you can use other devices such as watch pedometer.

Like any other device this step counter has its own negative side some of which includes the following:

•    Other less advance device needs to be turn off and on for each walking routine that you need to record.

•    You will not be able to upload the result in your computer.

•    You need someone expert on the device to change the battery rather than doing it by yourself.

•    It records false step thus making the result inaccurate.
The technique in recording your steps accurately depends on how you set the stride and length. You must remember that you need to have at least 10,000 steps per day in order to have a healthy lifestyle. For weight loss an interrupted four to six thousand steps is needed.
