Many people do not understand the essence of natural weight loss with eating only the amount they need for the amount of physical activity they perform. Unfortunately, the number of overweight American citizens is on the increase. Once you are overweight, you usually want to lose weight for a whole lot of reasons, some related to health, others having to do with looks. Research shows that wearing a pedometer each day really helps people to get more exercise and therefore either maintain or lose weight. The truth is maintaining your weight is easier than losing those excess pounds and the heavier you become the harder it is to lose the weight. One thing we all know, is that weight gain is going to happen if we do not take steps to control it. If you have lost weight with a calorie controlled diet and you are not increasing your activity, it won’t take long for you to revert back to your old eating habits and you will begin to regain your weight. With a growing number of health problems related to weight and obesity, experts suggest following a natural weight loss program. By taking 1000-2000 more steps each day can make a difference between weight gain, maintaining or losing weight. 2000 extra steps each day may sound like a whole lot at first, but you can spread it out over the day. You can take a stroll during your lunch break, park a little further away when running errands or when you go to work. You can take the steps instead of the elevator or take a walk in the evening around the block with a friend. Once you begin counting your steps with a pedometer, you will find new and creative ways to add more steps to your day. To start, you will need to first establish how many steps a day you take right now by wearing your pedometer each day for a week and recording your daily steps. After a week add all the steps together and then divide by 7. This will give you your average daily steps. You can then see how many more steps you can add each day. Maintaining a natural weight loss program means sticking to low fat meals that are high in fiber and contain complex carbohydrates with a moderate amount of protein. Manufacturers know that there is a huge market for low-fat or even fat-free products, but the propensity and popularity of these foods are not lowering the average weight of the nation. What people fail to understand is that it’s not just the fat in their food that is making them gain weight, it’s the quantity of food they consume and caloric content of it. What happens is that overweight people think that if it’s fat free they can eat more of it. When to eat and how often can be a contentious subject. The latest thoughts suggest that keeping to regular meal times, eating low fat foods, and eating small nutritious snacks between meals may be the answer. Therefore, maintaining a healthy weight is just that; a natural weight loss program, with a low fat diet and increasing your activity, can help you to live a long healthy life.

Pedometers can help add fun into walking for your health and they can serve as great motivators and trackers. A pedometer is basically a small digital device not much bigger than a pager or cell phone that counts steps. The more high-tech models can also have additional functions to select from.
A number of pedometers are available with different features and prices. This is why it may be wise to consider your needs and your budget before purchasing one.
For the best accuracy most pedometers should be kept horizontal and be worn on the waistband. In case the device comes unclipped and to prevent it from falling off and getting lost while walking or jogging, safety straps are available. Additional features that can be useful are calorie counters, heart rate monitors and distance counters.
To get the best results from a pedometer it is wise to wear it daily and all day long. This will enable you to initially accumulate your average number of steps based on your regular activities and allow you to set realistic goals. A goal you might consider is gradually increasing your steps by 250-500 per day to reach a 10,000 daily step count. On average 1,000 steps equals ½ mile. Of course this can vary depending on the speed and length of your stride.
10,000 steps per day may seem an ambitious goal but there are a number of easy ways that you can achieve this. You might consider skipping the elevator and taking the stairs, parking at a greater distance from where you want to go and creating situations where you will walk more during a given day. Other ways include walking to an associate’s office instead of calling them, taking a turn around the block at lunchtime and taking the dog and your kids for a walk after dinner every evening.
Pedometers can help your kids increase their physical activity and become more fit also. You might consider holding family contests and awarding prizes to the family member who did the best that week. With a pedometer you could record everyone’s progress and set goals. Walking is one of the simplest exercises you can do to get into shape and improve your health.
